I just read the lastest SL press release....we're getting REAL weather!!! Windwardmark was aquired by Linden Labs, and their WindLight tech will be incorporated into the SL viewer soon. Super Cool!

The Lindens just announced on their blog that durring the land rush to get the cheaper cost islands before the deadline that "Second Life is set to expand by 30% as new islands come online". That's a ton of new islands....I think I'm about to get really busy!

New Island: Fiji

Have been so busy with custom islands I haven't had a chance to blog them...and since SL is down, I guess this is my chance!

Fiji has two main islands and countless (well, i don't want to count them, feel free) smaller islands surrounding it. These islands are perfect for any aquaphile - plenty of room for surfing, yachting, jetskiing etc...so much water, so many little places to explore. Fiji was hard, because there are so many levels of detail you could include or discard. I think I reached a happy medium by discarding all the reefs surrounding the islands, and compressing the islands into the space available. I will be putting up better pictures soon, when SL is up again.

Some clients (not this one, thank god) get very squeamish about devoting so much room to water, like if it's not land it's just a "waste". I *can* understand that in *some* situations, ie. if you aspire to become a slumlord in SL, packing in as many people as possible into one sim...and that is perfectly alright, if that's what you want to do. I was awaking from a nap when it came to me. Designing islands is like designing golf courses. You can pay a couple bucks and play golf at Putt-Putt or Golf 'n' Stuff or Gooney Golf, which is completely landbound and designed to fit as many holes as possible in the smallest space, or you can play on a stunning golf course, full of wasted area like sandtraps, water obstacles, trees, ocean views etc....Is the "wasted" space worth it? Hell, I don't even play golf, but I think it is.

My friend Anya said it a different way: "The default islands that they give you when you buy a private island are like the default skins you get when you first start SL...newbie skin... but on a bigger scale." I couldn't agree more!

The movie that I was in just won the SecondLife 2006 Machinima Awards...that's me at the end on one of my surfboards! You can see Bora Bora Isles in the background before we had it landscaped fully. There's a little too much shooting in the movie for me personally, but, oh well.

I just made my first sale of an island... and it was Isle de Margarita and St Martin...a perfect choice...

It is widely believed that St. Barts was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493, and he named it in honor of his brother Bartolomeo. In the mid-1600s, the French arrived, took control from the indigenous indians, and built small settlements.

In 1784 it was sold (traded) to Sweden, and even though the French bought it back in 1878, some Swedish influences remain, including the name of the its capital, Gustavia.

The island is part of the French overseas department of Guadeloupe, and the French influence and style are everywhere.

It is considered by many to be the Caribbean's most beautiful island, with dozens of white sand beaches, crystal clear waters and a green, hilly landscape punctuated by numerous lagoons.

St. Barts is definitely upscale, and a favorite of the rich and famous. The island is chic and simply stunning. Gustavia, a duty-free port, is a picturesque place of red-roofed buildings, boutiques, a yacht-filled harbor, and a very relaxed lifestyle.

Terraforming in Second Life is something everyone can do, and most people do it badly. Doing it by hand, especially when you are terraforming a whole sim can take days to do correctly, and you have no overall scope of the project.

I've seen so many islands out there that have major problems like no sense of balance, beaches that instantly plunge you 20 m under the water, square ugly islands parceled off like prison cells etc., that I finally wanted to give people an easy and instant alternative to doing it themselves. I have about 50 or so islands that I have designed with nice sloping beaches, lots of water, and smooth inlands. They are taken from real life, real islands designed by [fill in your deity here]. They can be easily uploaded using the estate tools for sim owners, changing a task that took days or weeks into one that takes minutes. I have left the islands flat, so the sim owner can customize it to their liking. Much easier to make a mountain that to get the basic parts of an island right...
